Monterey – The land Where Dreams Start…

Monterey, the beautiful harbor in Northern California, probably also has the most gorgeous beaches in the bay area. But Monterey to me, it’s more than a beautiful harbor city with breathtaking scenes, this is the land where I first landed in USA and where my American dreams started. I remembered the first morning when I wake up in Monterey, I can breath the ocean!  I took a short walk to the beach where it was very close to the hotel; I saw the sun rise and I can see the ocean was smiling. That was the moment that I knew I want to set my career in American to pursue an French man’s American dream.

Having lived in Monterey for a few years, I felt like I know every place to go in this city, but often surprisedly, I can always spot something new. Here are a few spots that are always my favorite:

Fisherman’s Wharf:

Don’t laugh at this name and start imaging the fisherman’s wharf in San Francisco with thousands of tourists around, this is a real Fisherman’s wharf!! Even of today, part of this wharf is still being used by fishermen for fishing industry, it is much less touristy compared to the San Francisco’s fishermen’s wharf. This is the place you can feel the sound, smell and moves of the ocean! My favorite thing to do here is to sample taste the Monterey Style Clam Chowder which are given to the tourists by EVERY restaurant to attract them come in and eat. The Monterey Style Clam Chowder, often loaded with big bites of clams and smoked bacons, are so creamy and delicious! The best way to eat them is to order a sourdough bread bowl and eat the soup together with the chewy, sour yet soft inside (when soaked with the soup) bread bowl.  Fried calamari, is also something you cannot miss. Because the seafood are so fresh here, the fried calamari taste specially crunchy and flavorful. Grab a box of fried calamari, and drink some fresh beers on the wharf, you will wish time just stop at this moment!

Cannery RowCannery Row is mostly famous for its historic sardine factories decades ago, but it has became one of the most visited spots in Monterey due to its beautiful waterfront street and the nearby Monterey Aquarium. There are many cute shops around, you can always spot something quite unique. We were attracted by a candle shop; the candles insides are all hand-made with a sphere ball shaped outside that you can hang it like a round lantern!  Each candle ball comes with a different design, I see some coconut trees on the beach, and some flowers with leaves extended around, or some stars hanging in the sky… That’s the type of shops that I can stay for hours and seek some inspiration for my food and culinary ideas!

The Fish Hopper

This is our favorite restaurant now – both my wife and I are totally hooked by the food here! I love Fish Hopper’s incredible gorgeous water front view, and its equally amazing menus! The menu here is often changing depends on the availability of the seafood. One thing I love Monterey so much is that this area produces unbelievable delicious seafood in that the cold ocean water is continuously striking the rocks near the ocean and  has brought the best environment for seafood growing. The food style is Monterey is a mixed style of Northern California with Italian Sicilian style since there are lots Italian immigrant live here. Monterey seafood dishes are always fresh and bountiful, topped with different colorful vegetables and combined with multi-layers of flavors. We ordered a Monterey style Sardine appetizer and a petrale sole stuffed with shrimp and crab, hmmm, so good, so fresh, we are short of words to describe the food!
